Freud's Psychosexual
Theory
The Foundations of Psychosexual Theory
Five Psychosexual Stages
Personality develops through five
stages: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and
genital. Each stage focuses libido on
different erogenous zones.
Libido and Pleasure
Life revolves around tension and
pleasure. T ension arises from libido
(sexual energy), and pleasure from its
release. 'Sexual' includes all pleasurable
actions and thoughts.
Importance of Early Years
The first five years are key to
personality. The id must be controlled,
creating conflict with social norms. The
ego and superego develop to manage
this.

The Role of Conflict
1
Stage Conflicts
Each stage has a conflict that must be resolved to move
forward.
2
Energy Use
Resolving conflicts uses sexual energy. More energy spent
means more stage traits remain.
3
Troop Analogy
Like troops marching, opposition arises. Greater difficulty
leaves more troops (libido) behind, hindering progress.
